The Institute

The Institute for Bank Management and Banking Law is an interdisciplinary research institution that is affiliated as well as to the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences as to the Law Faculty. The institute was founded in 1957 due to a joint initiative of private banks and banking associations. The University of Cologne’s Institute for Bank Management and Banking Law takes on the current challenges that face the bank economy and works on solutions which match the highest scientific standards and at the same time are practically useful.

The bank management branch of the institute is closely interlaced with the University of Cologne’s Department of Bank Management and supports the department to fulfill its mission in research and teaching. The bank management´s research agenda covers a broad spectrum of topics.

Promoted by the financial crisis research activities focus on banking regulation thereby covering basic issues as well as specific topics. Examples are research projects on the organization and functioning of the banking supervision, measurement and limiting of systemic risks, and designing capital requirements for credit risk. Closely connected are issues of controlling credit risks with a special focus on estimating losses of defaulted loan contracts.

Private equity is another focal point of research covering topics such as investigating decision making of private equity funds manager and investigating the determinants of a fund´s success.

More recently, issues of sustainability in banking and finance have emerged as a further topic on the institute´s research agenda. Research projects within this field investigate the impact of sustainability on the banks´ risk exposure and the behavior of private investors with respect to sustainable financial investments.

Cooperation and Networking

The bank management branch of the Institute of Bank Management and Banking Law closely cooperates with banks, investment companies and banking associations. The institute organizes conferences on current bank related topics.
