“My time at the University of Cologne was fantastic”

Interview with CEMS MIM student Fabian Lorson

Fabian Lorson, student (CEMS MIM)

24-year-old Fabian Lorson is currently in the second term of the CEMS MIM programme at the University of Cologne. He was born and raised in a small town in Saarland. After completing alternative national service in 2011, he moved to Cologne to start his bachelor studies in Business Administration. Since the city, the people and the education provided matched his idea of a perfect place to study, he decided to come back after his gap year to embark on a CEMS Master at the University of Cologne. Soon he will be spending his term abroad at the ESADE Business School in Barcelona.

We asked Fabian some questions about Cologne, his field of study, what he plans to do after graduation and what he likes to do in his leisure time.

Why did you choose to apply for the CEMS MIM in Cologne?

The main reasons were the top-notch management education and the practical experience gained through the business project or the internship abroad. Being based in Cologne also gives me the chance to study at a world-leading business school during my term abroad without any tuition fees.

How do you like Cologne and its people and the WiSo Faculty?

What makes Cologne special is the city’s fantastic vibe. People are helpful, friendly and it’s easy to have fun. There are a lot of cultural and sport activities. Also, the night life is really great!

The WiSo Faculty provides a suitable study environment with learning rooms, a cafeteria and friendly staff, who are always eager to help you.

What is your impression of the CEMS MIM programme at the University of Cologne?

My time at the University of Cologne was fantastic. The courses offered an interesting curriculum plus exciting case studies and projects. Away from our academic responsibilities, the local CEMS Club offered various social activities and we had some great nights with our fellow students.

What do you like about this programme?

The big advantage is that you develop broad academic knowledge about international management but you also have the opportunity to specialise in your chosen supplementary category (e.g. Supply Chain Management or Finance).  So the degree opens up various career options.

What do you want to do after you graduate?

Currently I am thinking about gaining some work experience in a consultancy for a couple of years and then going back to the academic world to do a PhD.

What do you do in your free time when you are not studying?

Cologne offers various possibilities to enjoy your free time. I like to go out with friends or play soccer and Padel tennis. I also constantly take part in different activities offered by the local student groups.

Fabian, thank you for the interview!
