Edward Snowden via Live Stream at UoC

30th June 2017, presented by KölnAlumni

Edward Snowden „Courage“

"Speak not because it is safe, but because it is right"
(Edward Snowden)

Edward Snowden, US whistleblower and former CIA employee, uncovered the questionable practices of the foreign intelligence service NSA in 2013. Ever since, he has lived at a secret location in Russia. With his disclosures, he not only proved his courage, but also jeopardized his life and his personal freedom. What makes a person sacrifice his safety for an unprecedented contribution to civil society? Is it worthwhile, in times of nationalist tendencies on the one hand and mass surveillance and data mining on the other, to follow one’s conscience and stand up for one’s rights? KölnAlumni and the University of Cologne are happy to welcome the most famous whistleblower of our times via live stream from his Russian exile on 30 June 2017 in the University’s main auditorium (Aula). Edward Snowden will speak about topics that are important to him: courage, democracy, and freedom – not as privileges, but as the fundamental rights of all citizens.

The event is being hosted in cooperation with the foundation "The Right Livelihood Award" and AmerikaHaus e.V. NRW.
