Control in agile software development

WiSo scientists awarded at renowned conference

We congratulate Professor Christoph Rosenkranz, Phil Diegmann and Tim Dreesen: At the 53rd Hawaiian International Conference on System Science (HICSS) from January 7 to 10, the three researchers of the Cologne Institute for Information Systems (CIIS) received the "Best Paper Award" in the track "Software Technology" on the topic "Control in Agile Information Systems Development"

Their awarded paper is entitled "The Impact of Modes, Styles, and Congruence of Control on Agile Teams: Insights from a Multiple Case Study". In this study, they examined how control can be enacted in agile teams and how these control mechanisms influence team autonomy and team performance. Based on four case studies, Christoph Rosenkranz, Phil Diegmann und Tim Dreesen were able to show that it is not a question of ‘what’ controls should be exercised (e.g. outcome control), but rather ‘how’ controllers enact these controls in practice (e.g. more authoritative or enabling). The study thus contributes to a better understanding of agile software development projects.

The HICSS is considered one of the best known and longest established conferences in the field of information systems. Every year the conference, which is mainly hosted by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, brings together around 1,000 experts from almost 50 countries.
