Business English – FAQs
Who can participate in the English courses?
The English courses are open to all bachelor's and master's students of the WiSo Faculty as well as to students of the study programmes in which the WiSo Faculty is involved in (BA/MA Media Studies and Regional studies).
Can I receive credit points after successful participation in the English course?
The English course is worth 6 credit points. Bachelor's students of most WiSo Faculty study programmes (except students of business education [Lehramt BK1]) have the possibility to get the credits recognised within the module Studium Integrale, given that it has not yet been completed. For master's degree programmes it is not possible to recognise the credit points as part of the study programme.
Where do I find general information on the Studium Integrale?
Please refer to the website of the examination office and of the WiSo Student Service (Studienberatungszentrum SBZ):
Course registration and placement test
How can I register for a course?
Before being admitted to a course, it is necessary to register for a placement test in order to evaluate your current English language proficiency, both spoken and written. After participating in the placement test, you will be allocated a place in a course matching your current level. The registration for the placement test counts as the registration for the course.
When can I register?
Registration starts on 15 January for the spring term and on 15 June for the fall term of the respective year via a registration database. The link to the registration database will be published on the website once opened. Slots are limited and allocated on a 'first-come, first-served' basis. You will receive a confirmation email upon successful registration.
How is the placement test structured?
The placement test consists of two parts. It includes a written part and a short conversational part with one of the English language teachers at the Englisches Institut Köln. Here, you will also have the opportunity to give additional information on where you acquired your English skills. Preparation for the placement test is generally not necessary as the aim is to determine your current level of English.
Can my current English language certificate replace the placement test?
If you already hold a valid certificate, there is no need to participate in the placement test. In this case, please register for the placement test anyway in order to submit your data and send a short email with a scan of your certificate to wirtschaftsenglisch(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de. The language level allocation will be based on your test results.
Only the follwoing certificates are accepted:
- TOEFL-Test (iBT, CBT, PBT)
- Cambridge Certificate
- FILTERtest of the Englisches Institut Köln
I have completed the placement test before. Do I need to retake it again?
If you have already taken the placement test before, you do not need to take it again. In this case, please register in the 'Students who have already taken a Placement Test' group in order to submit your data and send a short email to wirtschaftsenglisch(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de stating that you have already taken the placement test with the FILTERtest certificate.
I already hold a valid certificate or have completed the placement test before. Should I register anyway?
Yes, please register for a placement test and send us a short email with a scan of your certificate or a note stating that you already have taken the placement test to wirtschaftsenglisch(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de. This helps us to store your data in our database.
I tried to register but received an error message ('error 500'). How should I proceed?
Please try to register at a later time. Should you receive an error message again, please send your data (name, student ID number, course of studies as well as the date you would like to take the placement test) to wirtschaftsenglisch(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de.
Can I register for several placement tests?
No, you can only register for one placement test at a time. Your account will be locked once you have registered for a placement test. We try to accommodate as many students as possible so please make sure you are able to attend the placement test that you registered for.
How can I deregister from the placement test?
Please send an email to wirtschaftsenglisch(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de. After receiving a confirmation email of your deregistration you have the opportunity to register for another date.
I missed the placement test. Is there another opportunity?
Once you register for a placement test, your account will be locked. If you missed the placement test for any unforeseen reason, please email wirtschaftsenglisch(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de. If there are still placement test dates available, your placement test registration will be cancelled so that you have the opportunity to register for another date.
I have been placed on the waiting list. Am I automatically considered for the next term?
You are not automatically considered. Please register again for the next term once the registration period has started.
Course participation, course changes and deregistration from the course
I am not able to participate in the allocated course. Can I switch to a different course?
You will have the chance to switch courses within the same language level if there are additional courses offered at the indicated level and if you find another student who would like to change courses with you. Course changes are organised via a mailing list. Further information will be communicated via email along with the deregistration deadline.
If you do not find somebody to switch courses with and you have to withdraw from the course, please send an email to wirtschaftsenglisch(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de before the deadline indicated in the email. Failure to deregister before the deadline means registration for an English course in future semesters cannot be accepted.
I am not able to participate in the allocated course. How can I deregister?
If for any reason you have to withdraw from the course, please send an email to wirtschaftsenglisch(at)wiso.uni-koeln.de before the deadline indicated in the email. Should you not deregister before the deadline has passed, we can no longer accept future registrations from you for English courses.
Why do I need to deregister if I will not participate in the course?
We aim to ensure that as many students as possible can take part in the offered English courses. As places are limited and the demand is higher than capacity, we ask that you deregister so that another student has the opportunity to participate in the course.
What happens if I missed a class?
You should contact one of your fellow students to make sure you come prepared for the next class. To pass the course successfully, you need to attend a minimum of 9 of 12 sessions.
Can I participate several times in the English courses offered by the WiSo Faculty?
No: students can only be offered the opportunity to take part in an English course once during their studies. However, if you bear the costs of a course yourself, you may participate again. Please contact the Englisches Institut Köln directly for further information regarding modalities and fees.
Please note: if the deadline to deregister from the course has passed, students are not entitled to use the free of charge offer from the WiSo Faculty in the future.
Do I need any course material?
Yes, you will need course materials, which will be provided by the Englisches Institut Köln. You will be informed by email where to collect the course material once the course allocation has been finalised. The course material will be free of charge.
Collection of certificates and credit transfer
When will I receive my certificate for the English course?
As soon as the certificates are issued and ready for collection you will be informed via email. You can then pick up the documents at the ZIB WiSo office during the dates specified in the email.
How can I transfer the credits for the course into the Studium Integrale section?
- Bachelor's students of most WiSo Faculty study programmes (except students of Business Education [Lehramt BK1]) have the possibility to get the credits recognised within the module Studium Integrale, given that it has not yet been completed. These students that are studying their programmes under the PO 2015 regulations as well as bachelor incoming guest students must register for the final exam in KLIPS 2.0. Registration for the exam takes place separately after the courses have commenced.
- After successful completion of the course and examination, you will receive a certificate. Your credits for the course will be transferred into the Studium Integrale section of your programme provided this section of your programme has not yet been completed.
