Rankings
As an orientation and decision-making tool as well as a marketing instrument, university rankings have become indispensable in the university landscape. They play a decisive role in the recruitment of students and researchers, in the successful application for thirdparty funding and in the external presentation of universities.
Although the importance and acceptance of university rankings is increasing, they are controversial due to their methodology. University rankings suggest that they represent universities in their entirety, but they always target only certain aspects and thus can hardly take into account different subject cultures and higher education systems. In this sense, university rankings will never evaluate a university as a whole and make an unbiased comparison between universities. These limitations should be taken into account when interpreting ranking results.
