University of Cologne loses its status as a university of excellence

WiSo Faculty still member of the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute and the Center of Excellence C-SEB

On 19 July 2019, the German Research Foundation (DFG) announced its decision on excellence. Although the University of Cologne was shortlisted, it is unfortunately not one of the winners. The decision is regrettable, especially since the University has developed outstandingly in recent years and had submitted a very conclusive strategy for further development.

The Dean of the Faculty of Management, Economic and Social Sciences, Prof. Ulrich Thonemann, sees the decision as a backlash for the faculty as well, but is convinced that the successful course of the faculty can still be continued: together with the University of Bonn, research will continue in the only existing cluster of excellence in economic sciences. The faculty has also been among the best in Germany in terms of research performance for decades. It will continue to build on this research strength and go on with its successful course creating profile-building research areas and research centres such as C-SEB and ECONtribute.
