International horizon 2020 - research project on the EU-Turkey relations

New project of the Jean Monnet Chair

The waves of refugees on Europe's borders and the elections that took place at the beginning of November in Turkey once again underlined the importance of this neighbouring country for Europe and the region. So the project „FEUTURE: The Future of EU-Turkey Relations: Mapping Dynamics and Testing Scenarios“ deals with a highly topical issue. The goal of this research is to examine Turkey's multifaceted relationships with Europe and its role in the region from a historical perspective, and also to develop scenarios for the future. This interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary analysis creates the foundation for policy recommendations and takes into account not only the prospect of accession but also other possible forms of partnership with Turkey.
The Jean Monnet Chair in European Policy at the WiSo-Faculty of the University of Cologne received in intense competition a payment of 2.5 million euros for the research project on the EU-Turkey relations from the horizon 2020-Framework Programme of the European Commission.
Prof. Wolfgang Wessels will coordinate a consortium of 12 further renowned international universities and think tanks for the project duration of three years together with Dr. Nathalie Tocci, Vice-Director of the Instituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) in Rom and Advisor to the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
