Crossover donations for kidney patients

A guest contribution to Süddeutsche Zeitung by Prof. Axel Ockenfels and Thomas Gutmann

Axel Ockenfels

What can I do, if my relative is a kidney patient and I want to donate an organ, but it’s not possible because of incompatibility?
An expedient are the so called "crossover donations". The term describes the situation, if for example you are not able to donate a kidney to your child because of incompatibility, but another relative of another sick child can. Crossover donations would give the possibility to donate respectively to the other patient. But in Germany, these kind of crossover donations of organs are not legally permitted.

An article at the Süddeutsche Zeitung by Axel Ockenfels, Professor for Economics and speaker of the Center of Excellence for Social and Economic Behavior at the University of Cologne and Thomas Gutmann deals with this topic.
