University didactics

The WiSo Faculty’s goal is to support its professors and other academic staff in their teaching as well as offer them training opportunities and thus to enhance teaching quality. Training is targeted at strengthening teaching staff’s interdisciplinary skills, in particular their abilities and know-how in the area of university didactics.

Extensive training programme

The WiSo Faculty offers its professors and other academic staff an extensive training programme. Costs are assumed by the Faculty. The following training courses in university didactics are offered:

Tutor workshops

The WiSo Faculty’s “Tutorial Model” aims to help students to study independently. This takes place in small groups from the very start of their studies and throughout the following semesters. To make sure that tutorials are organized and conducted successfully, tutors can acquire basic know-how about teaching and studying, facilitation and group dynamics as well as acquaint themselves with methodical tools in the framework of special workshops. The basic two-day workshop is run by the Centre for University Didactics each semester. Costs are assumed automatically by the Faculty.

Examples of good teaching

The WiSo Faculty and the University of Cologne as a whole award various prizes to professors and other academic staff for excellent teaching achievements.

Junior Teaching Award

The Junior Teaching Award is awarded for excellent teaching by mid-level academic staff. With this award, the WiSo Faculty wants to acknowledge their exceptional teaching achievements at all levels of its programmes. Good teaching is an important and essential part of an academic career. The prize is therefore awarded on the basis of an evaluation of courses by the Student Council.

Albertus Magnus Award

The Albertus Magnus Award is awarded by the student body and serves to recognize and encourage outstanding effort in teaching and commitment towards students in general at the WiSo Faculty. The graduates of each semester are entitled to vote and thus actively involved in the decision.
