Application

Application process

For admission, candidates need to apply for the Double Master’s Programme in European Studies at the University of Cologne and at Maastricht University.

The application period for the Double Master’s Programme at the University of Cologne runs from the last week of March to 30 April. Applications must be submitted online via the application portal. Once the application portal opens, the link that leads on to the portal will be published on this website.

In addition, applicants who have not obtained their bachelor’s degree in Germany or at Maastricht University must apply online via uni-assist online and by post until 30 April. When applying via uni-assist, please select the programme ‘MA in Political Sciences’ at the University of Cologne.

Entry requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree with at least 30 ECTS credits in Political Science and at least 12 further ECTS credits in Political Sciences or Methodology and Empirical Social Research. Please note the PDF specifications on the allocation of courses to the subject areas.
  • Overall grade equivalent to at least 2.7 (German grading system) in the bachelor's degree
  • English language skills

  • Letter of motivation in English, explaining the reasons for applying for the Double Master’s Programme (approx. 500 words)
  • Proof of sufficient language skills in English of at least C1 (CEFR) or equivalent (TOEFL min. ibt 100; IELTS min. 7.0; Cambridge CAE (B) or CPE (C); applicants do not need to submit further proof of their English skills if they have completed a Bachelor's degree totally taught in English, if they have completed a Bachelor's double degree and at least one year was spend in an English-speaking country or if they have a German school diploma indicating at least 5 points in the German grading system (end of class 11 (G8) or end of class 12 (G9)).
    Please note that Maastricht University has different requirements for demonstrating proficiency in English which can be accessed  here. 
  • Students need to fulfill the requirements of both universities in order to be included in the Double Master's Programme option.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate; in cases where present Bachelor studies have not been fully completed, application is permitted if the candidate has earned at least 80% of the required credits and will have achieved the remaining results by 30 September at the latest. The specific admission criteria governing the designated course of study (including the overall grade) must already have been fulfilled on the basis of the exam results available at the time of application
  • Transcript of records
  • Descriptions of all relevant courses taken during the bachelor (e.g. extracts from the course catalogue)
  • If applicable, transcript of studies abroad. In case any of the courses completed abroad have been credited towards the bachelor's degree of the home university, this written document must contain an official record of the courses taken and the grades received. Please also attach a description of the modules taken abroad
  • An essay in English written by the applicant, either specifically for this application or for earlier studies or other occasions. It is preferable, but not absolutely necessary, that the topic is related to European Studies. You can use a copy form earlier studies or another occasion. There are no requirements as to the length of the essay

Application deadlines

The online application for the Double Master’s Programme in European Studies takes place both through Maastricht University and the University of Cologne. Please note the different application deadlines at the two universities.

At the University of Cologne:

30 April 2018

  • For applicants with a German bachelor's degree or a bachelor's degree from Maastricht University: via the application portal - the link will be published on this website once it has opened
  • For applicants who do not hold a bachelor’s degree obtained in either Germany or at Maastricht University: via the application portal - the link will be published on this website once it has opened; additionally via uni-assist online and by post

At Maastricht University:

Selection process

Applications for the Double Master’s Programme are assessed by both universities. The admission boards of University of Cologne will communicate its decision at the end of June. The enrollement is takes place generally in August. The study programme starts in October in Cologne.

In case the application for the Double Master’s Programme has not been successful, it may still be considered for the regular MA in Political Science at the University of Cologne or for the regular Research Master in European Studies at Maastricht University, given that all entry requirements are fulfilled.
