Information Systems
The study of Information Systems is an independent interdisciplinary field rooted in informatics and the economic sciences, notably business administration. It deals with the conception, development and application of information systems in the economy and administration – and, to an increasing degree, in our private lives.
The subject area combines the theoretical knowledge of many disciplines with application-oriented system solutions to operative challenges. In numerous contexts of the working and living environment, information systems and their innovative force contribute solutions for the optimum structuring of products and (business) processes under overall economic conditions.
Perspectives
Business information specialists possess dual qualifications in business administration and informatics – a combination often sought in the labour market. Thus they can be employed in a variety of sectors (business consulting, systems development and information management) and intra-company areas, thereby assuming a “translational function” between management processes and the technically grounded world of systems.
The Bachelor programme in Information Systems at Cologne University has been conceived along these lines. After graduating, you may go on to deepen and expand your scientific know-how by taking your Master’s degree in Information Systems.

Priorities
Teaching in the field of Information Systems is based at three departments:
The Department of Information Systems and Operations Research deals with the systematic use of information and models in developing decision-support systems for the solution of complex practical problems.
The Department of Information Systems and Systems Development concentrates on the management of software development. To that end, information systems are examined under organizational and functional-technical aspects with the aim of developing recommendations for their configuration.
The focus concentrates on analysis, design, development and application of information and communication systems, with particular focus on product, process and business model innovation.
