The Study of Economics

A fundamental objective of the discipline of Economics is to convey science-based knowledge, in particular about theories and methodologies. To that end, a solid understanding of economic theories and a sure command of the analysis methods used in statistics and econometrics are imperative – given that detailed knowledge is prone to obsolesce rapidly, and theory and methodology can moreover be of help in dealing with new problem areas.

The Economics subject group offers the following degree programmes:

  • Bachelor of Economics (major and minor subjects, and profile groups)
  • Master of Economics (majors and various minors)
  • Doctoral Studies

Bachelor studies in Economics aim to equip students with the competences needed for responsible tasks and posts in the economy and public administration as well as in politics and international organizations. Bachelor degree courses also prepare students for activities in research and science, and for major responsibilities and positions requiring the completion of a consecutive master’s degree course in Economics.

Master studies in Economics provide opportunities for students to deepen their basic methodological knowledge and to enhance their personal profile with a tailored combination of the many specialized course offers in a variety of different fields. Students aspiring to a subsequent academic career in higher education can already during their master studies attend courses for the first year of most structured doctoral programmes. 

Doctoral studies at the Cologne Graduate School qualify candidates for an academic career in higher education and research establishments as well as in all areas of the economy, administration and politics in which in-depth knowledge of scientific procedures and methods is indispensable. In addition to advanced training in methodology and its specialization – up to the outer bounds of research – in the field of your choice, you will learn how to manage scientific projects independently. 

Further, a minor in Economics can be selected for combined regional studies at the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, for media studies in the subareas of Media Economics and Sociology, and for the BSc in Geography at the Faculty of Mathematics & Natural Sciences. Economics is also a component of Business Mathematics.
